Our Parish

The desire for a local parish among Malankara Orthodox families living from Upper Darby to West Chester and Delaware led to the first prayer meeting on August 5, 2006. With just six members, discussions began for forming a new congregation. By God’s grace, Kalpana No. 80/2006, issued on November 7, 2006, by H.G. Mathews Mar Barnabas, officially established the parish, with forty families joining at its inception.

A major milestone came in 2013, when the parish purchased the property at 4400 State Road, Drexel Hill, transitioning from a rented chapel to its own sanctuary. The church was consecrated on May 24–25, 2013 by H.G. Zachariah Mar Nicholovos.

The parish was formally named St. John’s Indian Orthodox Church of Delaware Valley through Kalpana No. 76/2007, with Rev. Fr. Geevarghese Errakkath serving as its first Vicar. In the years that followed, the parish was blessed by the leadership of Rev. Fr. Roy P. George in 2008, followed by Rev. Fr. Siby Varghese, who served as Vicar from 2009 to 2024. During his fifteen years of dedicated ministry, Fr. Siby played a significant role in strengthening the faith, fellowship, and overall growth of the parish community. Following the conclusion of his tenure, Rev. Fr. Shibu Venad Mathai served as Interim Vicar from June 1 to June 30, 2024, providing pastoral leadership during this period of transition.

In July 2024, Rev. Fr. Tojo Baby was appointed Vicar. His leadership, especially in nurturing youth and parish organizations, continues to guide the church forward. Under his ministry, the parish achieved another historic milestone in 2026 with the acquisition of the former Christian Science Society property across the street, expanding the facilities and ministry opportunities of St. John’s Indian Orthodox Church of Delaware Valley.
