The presence of Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church members in the United States can be traced back to the late 1960s and early 1970s, when families began settling across various parts of the country. As the community grew, the Church officially established the American Diocese in 1979, marking a significant milestone in organizing and nurturing the faithful in North America.
With continued growth and expansion, the American Diocese was reorganized in April 2009, forming two dioceses: the Northeast American Diocese and the Southwest American Diocese. Later, in 2025, a separate Canadian Diocese was established to better serve the increasing number of Orthodox faithful in Canada.
The Northeast American Diocese is blessed with the vibrant and visionary leadership of His Grace Zachariah Mar Nicholovos. Today, the Diocese comprises about 50 parishes across the six northeastern states of the United States, serving more than 20,000 faithful.
The Diocese also owns and operates the Holy Transfiguration Retreat Center in Dalton, Pennsylvania, a vast and beautiful spiritual campus dedicated to retreats, conferences, and the formation of the faithful.
